Chemical Name: Expanded Amorphous Alumina Silicate
COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS TVL AND PEL
OSHA PEL – TWA: 15mg/M3 Total Particulate
Ingredient Name: Expanded Amorphous Alumina Silicate
5 mg/M3 Respirable Fraction Hazardous Component: None ACGIH TLV – 10 mg/M3 other: n/a Hazardous Classification: Not Classified
HAZARDOUS CLASSIFICATION
Summary: This product contains no detectable hazardous components: However, both OSHA and NIOSH share the position that an exposure limit is appropriate for the respirable fraction of any airborne particulate in the workplace.
Medical conditions, which may be aggravated: Persons sensitive to dust may experience discomfort when exposed to heavy concentrations of airborne material.
Acute chronic heal effects: Non ACGIH states, “Amorphous Alumina Silicate is considered a “Nuisance” dust which seems to have little adverse effect on lung and does not produce problems when exposures are kept under reasonable control.”
Primary Route(s): Inhalation, dust contact with eyes.
Inhalation: Irritation in nose and throat. In extreme exposure, some congestion may occurr.
Eyes: Temporary Irritation Skin: N/A Skin Absorption: N/A Ingestion: N/A
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Drink water to clear throat and blow nose to evacuate dust.
First Aid Measures:
Eyes: Do not rub eyes. Flush with large quantities of water. If irritation persists, contact a physician.
Skin contact: N/A Skin absorption: N/A Ingestion: N/A
Fire fighting measures; Extinguishing media: None, if product unused.
If used to collect flammable liquids, consult MSDS of liquid collected. Mix W/L at least 6 to 1 with liquid.
Unusual fire and explosion hazards: None if product unused. If used to collect flammable liquid, the consult MSDS of liquid collected.
Flash Point: Non flammable Flammable limits: Non-flammable Auto ignition temperature: N/A
LELL unusual fire or explosion hazards: None UEL: None
NFPA: Flammable/combustible liquid classification N/A
EXPOSURE CONTROL/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Goggles: Eye Protection recommended. Gloves: Not Required, (consult MSDS of liquid being absorbed). Respirator: Not Required
Ventilation: Apply negative pressure air at dump station to entrain airborne dust, if present.
Other: If dusty conditions exist, NIOSH approved protective equipment is advisable.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Boiling Point: N/A Vapor Pressure, (mmHg): N/A Vapor density: (air=1): N/A
Solubility in water: Insoluble in water and most acids. Specific gravity: (h20=): .6-20 Melting point: 2000 degrees F.
Evaporation Rate: (Butyl Acetate=1): NIL Appearance and odor: White powder – no odor, PH: 6.5-7.5
TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Summary: NTP has not yet conducted toxicology studies on Amorphous Alumina Silicates (AAS). ACGIH TLV recommendation AAS (containing no asbestos and <0.1% Crystalline Silica) is considered a “nuisance” dust that seems to have little adverse effect on the lung…does not produce significant organic disease or toxic effect when exposures are kept under reasonable control. According to the Schundler report, no ill effects found in over 50 years.
PRECAUTION FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE & DISPOSAL
Steps to be taken in case material is released or spilled. Sweep or vacuum and dispose of as for any inert, non-carcinogenic solid waste. Waste disposal method: If product unused, then no special disposal procedure necessary. After product has been used to collect liquid material, dispose of in compliance with EPA Federal Register regulations. In most cases dumpster disposable. Precautions to be taken in handling and storing: None. Other precautions: None in unused form
REGULATORY INFORMATION OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29cfr, 1910 and 1200: Material will be listed in OSHA table as “particulates” not otherwise regulated.
See Hazard identification of this MSDS.
RCRA: This material is not defined as hazardous waste per CERCLA
TSCA: Material is listed in TSCA inventory. Naturally occurring chemical substances are automatically included.
Excluded from reporting requirements.
CERCLA: Material not reportable under CERCLA.
SARA: 311/312 hazard categories – not found, 313 reportable ingredients – none.
